Step 1: Clean teak wood, but how?

With everything that's outside, it's inevitable that you'll have to use water and the like to remove pollen, bird droppings, etc. Just like you take your car to the car wash.

Basically, a firm brush and a mild soap solution are sufficient for cleaning if you follow these tips:

  1. Use a firm brush and a mild soap solution. A household sponge can also be used to remove light dirt.
  2. Always brush in the direction of the grain.
  3. After cleaning, rinse the piece of furniture thoroughly with clean water.

Important: Never use a high-pressure cleaner to clean the teak furniture!

Step 2: How to care for teak furniture?

To maintain the golden brown color, teak furniture should be treated with teak oil approximately once or twice a year. It is best to do this once at the beginning of the gardening season in spring and once in autumn before the garden goes into hibernation.

To make sure that the color of the oil you choose matches your expectations, you should first test it on an inconspicuous area, for example on the back of your leg.

You can find the instructions for using the respective oil on the can or bottle. However, the following should generally be observed:

  1. Clean the furniture thoroughly and let it dry
  2. If the cleaned wood feels rough, sand it lightly.
  3. Cover the surface of the work area well before you begin.
  4. Apply the oil or sealer evenly and thinly using a lint-free cloth or according to the instructions.
  5. Allow the piece of furniture to dry thoroughly after applying the oil.

Important : The teak wood must be 100% dry and free of dust before you start!

Step 3: Protect teak furniture, but how?

In addition to cleaning and care, you can apply a glaze to make the teak furniture resistant to water and dirt, such as Teak Patina Shild from Traditional Teak. The transparent glaze not only prevents food (coffee, ketchup, red wine, oil, etc.) from penetrating the teak and causing stains, but also protects the wood from moisture and the appearance of green algae.

The product is also very suitable for lovers of the silver-grey patina, as it also protects it.

The application is similar to that of teak oil, but you should always pay attention to the individual application instructions for the product. When glazing Traditional Teak, the following steps must be observed:

  1. Clean the furniture thoroughly and let it dry. Before using the product, the furniture must be 100% dry and free of dust.
  2. Cover the surface of the work area well before you begin.
  3. Apply the glaze evenly and thinly with a lint-free cloth and then let the furniture dry for an hour. Then apply a second thin layer.
  4. Allow the furniture to dry for at least 48 hours before exposing it to moisture again.

Important: If you use PatinaShild on new teak, leave the furniture outside for a week beforehand.

Tips and tricks from our manufacturers and customers

1. Tip against wasp damage:

Anti-Wasp by Barlow Tyrie

Barlow Tyrie's anti-wasp product contains a vanilla essence, which harmlessly prevents the wasps from using the cellulose from the wood of the teak furniture to build their nests.

2nd tip to turn grey furniture back into golden brown furniture:

There are special cleaners, such as Traditional Teak's " Teak Cleaner and Brightener ", to remove the patina from furniture. Depending on how strong the patina is, this may require some stamina and muscle power when scrubbing, but the effort is worth it.

3. Tip for working with cleaners and tea oils:

No matter which cleaning product or teak oil you choose, always wear gloves when working with it.

Always test the cleaning agent or teak oil on a small, hidden area of the furniture before treating the furniture with it.

4. Tip for cleaning with high-pressure cleaners:

Never use a high-pressure cleaner to clean wooden furniture! Teak is a natural product and breathes. The power of the high-pressure cleaner will attack the grain of the wood and small cracks may form. This means that dirt and water remain in the wood for longer and the aging process of the piece of furniture is accelerated.
